We had another wonderful potluck dinner at
Marilyn and Paul Smith's lovely home.
The food was wonderful, especially the fact that it was a meal and not just muchies. Not to say munchies are not good, but I enjoy a good meal every now and then. We had a good turnout with 19 people there. Seven of us stayed and played cards until after 10:00. Marilyn and Paul introduced us to their version of rummy. It was fun, with Paul having the winning low score of the evening.

"Casino Night"
Evie & Wayne Frazier's house

We had a wonderfule evening. We started it off with wonderful Hors D'oeuvres. It made such an impression that our next Pot Luck Dinner is going to be a repeat of Hors D'oeuvres.

Once everyone was satiated with food, we set up two tables to play cards. One table had a game called "Garbage" and the other "Blackout Bridge". We played for about an hour and then switched tables so people who wanted to play both games would have the opportunity. After that we played "Trivial Pursuit" with the men vs the women. The men, of course, easily won that game.

All in all, a very successful evening. Thanks Evie!

This was another excellent dance. It was akin to a private party since there were approx 60 people. Hats off to Jolene for finding Christopher's to cater the event. The food was excellent and we had glass plates and real metal utensils. Horray!

May 17th , (Friday)
Lunch Cruise to the Lighthouse Restaurant
We had three boats, (Smith, Casey, & Shallbetter) who started toward the Lighthouse restaurant that beautiful morning, but only two arrived. Bill's boat seemed to run into something and lost most of his power. Concerned for what was wrong with the boat, Bill headed back home. Fortunately, they made it back to Bill and Susan's home, got in their cars and joined the remainder of the group at the restaurant. The food was delicious, the company supurb, and overall it was a wonderful lunch. I would like to do this more often.

The good news is that Bill thinks that his first analysis of what happened was wrong, It now appears that he had a fuel problem and the fix may be as easy as replacing all the filters and putting a water absorbing additive to the fuel. More on the solutiong later.

May "Tur-duc-hen" Pot Luck Dinner and Wine Tasting Party
Susan and Bill Shallbetter's Home - 6:00 PM
Unfortunately, I was too busy tasting wine and eating to take any pictures of this event. The wine tasting was a rousing success. We all had an opportunity to sample 10 Chardonney's and 2 Zinfandel's. We had rating sheets and after we had tasted all the masked bottles, they were unmasked and we could write down our favorites.
The Tur-duc-hen was also a success. This is a combination of turkey, duck and Chicken stuffed into a turkey skin. When you look at it, it looks like a turkey. But the surprise comes when you cut it. It had a corn bread stuffing and a rice stuffing along with the three meats. Thanks to everyone in the August Heat for making this another wonderful culinary delight.

April 30, (Tuesday)
Tour Ding Darling Refuge to view birds,
lunch at the Mucky Duck on Captiva and
t
hen collect sea shells along a Sanibel beach
We met at the Ding Darling Visitor Center at 9:00AM. After a short stroll through the Visitor Center we took a liesurely drive, with many stops, through the refuge. At about 11:00 we headed up to Captiva and lunch at the Mucky Duck restaurant. It is located on the gulf side facing the beach and the gulf. We had a wonderful lunch. After lunch, some of us went back to Sanibel and did some shelling along the beach. All in all, it was another wonderful day with wonderful people.

We had
Lunch at Cape Dog and Deli in Cape Coral. We had a good turnout of 12 people who all enjoyed the excellent sandwiches and soups.
Bowling (after lunch) at Friendship Lanes - 1899 Del Prado
We had seven bowlers, Elaine and Buck Berryhill, Susan a Bill Shallbetter, Marjorie and Joe Fox, and Dick Farr. We had a cheering section of Di Farr, along with Bonnie and Al Hofmann. We all had a wonderful time with a lot of good-natured ribbing, laughing and applauding. Dick found out how slippery the lanes can be and Bill bowled a first game of 165. However, Bill felt remorse about beating everyone so soundly that he bowled a 99 on the next game to appease everyone.

Saturday, January 26th, 2002
Super Saturday Sock Hop
Dinner Dance 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Cape Coral Yacht Club
This was another very successful dinner dance. We had 11 people from the August Heat attend this event. Unfortunately we could only fit eight people per table so we were split up. However, that gives some August Heat members an opportunity to meet new people. The meal was very good; with barbecued ribs being the main dish. The theme was a '50's sock hop. As people arrived they were treated to two beautifully restored 50 era cars parked at the front door. The music was rock and roll and we were treated to a song fest by the "Brylcream". They sang many of the old favorites and they were VERY GOOD.

Sunday, January 20th, 2002
"Chili Cookoff" and White Elephant Exchange
Pat and Jerry Summers' home - 5:00 PM

Thanks to Pat and Jerry Summers for hosting this gastronomic event! We had 20 people in attendance who were treated to numerous Hors D'Oevres, followed by three types of chile, salad, crackers, cheese, etc. But wait there's more, for the sweet tooth in all of us we were treated to three kinds of pies. The meal was delightful, but the company was outstanding.
After dinner we then went into the White Elephant Exchange. Many of us were fortunate enough to go home empty handed but those who did take a treasure or two home will remember them for a long time to come. We all are curious where the mirrored palm tree is going to be displayed in the home of Marilyn and Paul Smith; I know Paul was certainly certainly very curious.

Following the Jan 3rd NRC meeting:
Lunch at Joe-Bob's Tavern. A great place to have lunch.
Bowling (after lunch) at Friendship Lanes - 1899 Del Prado
We had a fun time bowling this afternoon with four bowlers (Elaine and Buck Berryhill, Jerry Summers, and Bill Shallbetter), and four people cheering us on (Evelyn Frazier, Bonnie and Al Hofmann, and Pat Summers).

Notice: We are planning on lunch and bowling after every NRC meeting.
The price for bowling on Tuesdays is $1.60 per game.

December 22, 2001
"No Snow Ball" Dinner Dance
Cape Coral Yacht Club
Seven members of the August Heat were present at the "No Snow Ball" the Saturday before Christmas. Overall there were about 90 people attending. We had a delightful dinner and then danced until about 10:30. It was a fun evening. Buck and Elaine Berryhill sold tickets while Bill and Susan Shallbetter were the "official greeters" welcoming everyone to the party. Jerry and Pat Summers went from table to table trying to distribute pictures of past events that people had purchased and offering other pictures of various New Residents Club activities for sale.

Wednesday, December 19, 2001
Tour the Edison-Ford Holiday House Grounds!
We had a group of 15 who strolled through the dazzling displays of decorated trees and millions of twinkling lights at the Edison-Ford Winter Estates. It was a wonderful evening and well worth the trip. After spending about two hours enjoying the amazing display of lights we returned to the Shallbetter's for dessert and coffee.
Click here for a Picture of the group minus Bill Shallbetter (the photographer) and Elizabeth, Dianne Durbin's daughter.

Watch the Cape Coral Boat Parade!
This was a wonderful evening! We had 20 people lined up on the Bimini Canal watching the parade pass us by. The weather was absolutely perfect with temps in the 70's and a light breeze blowing. A must do for next year.
