Members of August Heat were saddened with the death of Bill Brucks on January 25, 2002.  Bill was with us for only a few short months, but during that time we all became acquainted with his elegant zest for life, his strong faith, and his charismatic smile.
Bill grew up and graduated
with honors from the Princeton, Indiana, public schools.  He turned down a college scholarship, joined the U. S. Marines, and served in the Korean War.  After an honorable discharge, he worked for a few years in an oil repair shop and then decided to continue his education.
Bill completed an accounting degree from the University of Evansville, Indiana,  and then completed a professional career with

resulted in Bill becoming the step-father to Christopher Williams who, with his wife,  Michelle Jarvis, gave him a pair of twin grandsons.

Bill loved his Cape Coral home and toiled endlessly in and around the structure in a quest to improve it's beauty.  He also loved boating, fishing, collecting coins, gardening , and generally being in the out-of-doors.

Bill is a member of the Cape Coral Elks Club, Rotary, University of Evansville Alumni Association, and the Ca-loosa-hat-che Rare Fruit Exchange.  He had life memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion.

He will be sadly missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Whatever Happened to January

August Heat had a busy January, and the activities of the organization seemed to  strain the social calendars of just about everybody.

Dinner Dance

At least 12 Heat members attended the NRC Dinner Dance on January 19.  Cape Coral's Brylcream gave a 50's style concert that thrilled all attendees.  Some Heat members would make Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers jealous!

Chili Cookoff

The January Potluck and Chili Cookoff was held in the home of Jerry and Pat Summers on January 20.  A total of 22 Heat members attended the event, and all hazarded at least some version of chili:  Texas Chili, White Chili, or Chili Chili.  The while elephant exchange proved to be a battle with Heat members fighting over the gifts.  The huge grapefruits of Elaine Berryhill were in great demand.

NRC Meeting, Lunch, and Bowling Extravaganza

Many Heat members who attended the regular NRC meeting on Tuesday, February 5, also attended lunch at the Cape Dog and Deli in downtown Cape.

Lunch was followed with a bowling extravaganza that was reported to be extraordinarily eventful. First of all, Bill Shallbetter bested his previous Heat bowling record with a 169.  Not bad Bill.  Second, Dick Farr was reported to have demonstrated some unusual and illegal bowling approaches to the lane.  One account of his approach had
