Washington, DC pictures

On Saturday we took the Metro from the Springville station to the Smithsonian station downtown. This is a picture of the Smithsonian station. All of the underground stations have this same beautiful design.

The Washington Monument is currently undergoing some refurbishing, so it is surrounded by a framework for the workers. We were both very pleasantly surprised, the framework is actually very attractive.

This is the Korean war memorial. It is a very powerful scene. It depicts a group of soldiers walking across a field. They are all very alert and looking in all directions for any sign of trouble. They are made of stainless steel and are somewhat larger then life.

There is a granite wall that runs along the left side of the picture. It is difficult to make out in this picture, but I have pictures of it below.

This is a closer look at a couple of the statues.

In this picture you can make out the etchings of the soldiers and the visitors reflected in the shiny granite surface.

This gives you a better idea of the size of the wall and the etchings. The pictures appear to be of real people who served in the Korean Conflict. Susan appreciated the pictures of women on the wall.

One of the newest monuments in the area is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt monument. It is actually a fairly sizeable park area on the South side of the Tidal Basin. It is a series of adjoining areas that depict different times periods during his presidency

This is the early thirties timeframe depicting the soup lines and... hmmm, looks like a freeloader in the back.

This is a panoramic picture of the Great Falls area on the Potomac river taken from the overlook on the Virginia side. This was a favorite spot to go kayaking when we lived in the DC area. It has been a very dry Spring and the water level is very low.

The Great Falls are on the left of the picture.
